Many of the Apple Mac Keyboard user might have experienced some sort of lag at some point of time. You might be frustrated typing a key and it takes about half a second or more for the typed characters to appear.
Sometimes, you would type a word and it appears after a second. It can be very frustrating to see the slow appearing typed characters. You cannot type with the flow and it will be a night mare. I have experienced this lag or slow characters appearing issue with my Apple Mac Wireless Bluetooth Keyboard ( Magic Keyboard) many times in the last few years.
I have tried many solutions and only one worked all the time. I will share all of them in this article on How to fix the issue of Mac Keyboard Lag.

Why is the lag or slow appearance of characters in Mac KeyBoard Typing ?
One of the key reasons for this is the Bluetooth. As you are connecting wireless with Bluetooth, sometimes the system gets buggy and fails. That’s all I can think of. Ideally Apple should fix these bugs, but it could be hardware as well and they may not be able to help. In any case, below are the solutions.
How to fix Mac Keyboard Lag or Slow issue ?
There are two main options to fix the lag issue. Let’s look at each of them below.
Reset the Bluetooth Module
The first and easy option is to “Reset the Bluetooth Module”. Below is the step by step guide.
- Step 1 – Press Option and Shift Key together on the Mac Keyboard
- Step 2 – Click on the Bluetooth icon on the top menu bar of Mac, when you have both the Option and Shift key pressed together.
- If you cannot find the icon in menu, go to System Preferences > Bluetooth and click on check box “Show Bluetooth in menu bar” to see the bluetooth icon in menu bar.
- Step 3 : Click on the “Reset the Bluetooth module”. See below screenshot.
- Step 4 : You will see status messages like The mouse and keyboard would say “Connection Lost” and then “Connected”
- Step 5 : Sometimes, after you do this, the issue would be fixed. If this does not work, then you go the next option and it works all the time.
Factory Reset All Connected Apple Devices
This option is the one that is slightly not convenient, but works all the time. I had success with this every time, when the first one failed.
- Step 3 : Click on the “Factory reset all connected Apple devices”. See below screenshot.
- Step 4 : After you do this, the connection to the Keyboard is gone and also for all the connected apple devices.
- Step 5 : You need to use the Trackpad or Touch Pad as the mouse to again pair your mouse and Magic Keyboard. For this you need go to the System preferences > Bluetooth and then click on pair for the keyboard.
- Step 6 : Your issue should be fixed.
